The Molt thesis
Websites don't break. They age. And they age faster every year. This is the case for a different way to keep your website as good as your business: what's changing, why the usual fix keeps failing, and why a custom website that can molt is the answer in the end.
A long read · about 12 minutes
Dear business owner,
You've spent years getting good at what you do. Your clients are better than they were. Your services are sharper. Your team is stronger. You've earned your reputation the hard way.
But there's a good chance your website is still telling the story of the company you were three, five, maybe seven years ago. And every day, it's quietly making a first impression for you, before anyone ever picks up the phone.
This letter is about that gap. Why it grows faster than most people think. Why the usual fix doesn't close it for long. And what we believe works instead.
In 2006, researchers at Carleton University showed people web pages for just 50 milliseconds, shorter than a blink. Their snap judgments of how good a site looked matched almost perfectly with what they thought after looking longer. The verdict on your website is in before the page has even finished loading.
And that verdict isn't just about looks. In the Stanford Web Credibility study, nearly half of all people judged how credible a company was partly by the visual design of its website. Not by the credentials. Not by the reviews. By how the site looked.
Put those together and the picture is simple. People decide in an instant, they decide on design, half of them are looking on a phone, and they don't wait. A great business with a dated website doesn't look great. It looks average.
Here's the part most people underestimate. A website doesn't only get old because time passes. It gets old because everything around it keeps moving: the devices people use, what Google rewards, what the law requires, and what people are used to seeing on every other site and app.
We looked at the milestones that changed how a website should look or work, from new devices and design languages to search updates and new rules. Then we counted them per five years. The pace isn't steady. It's accelerating.
Count of dated milestones per period, compiled by Molt. 2025 shows a single year. See the full list and sources below.
In the early 2000s, a website could look current for five years or more. Today, a site launched in 2021 has already lived through a new Core Web Vital, AI answers in Google, a new accessibility standard, new European accessibility law and two new design languages from Apple and Google.

Every era left a look behind. You can probably picture most of these, and you can probably name a website that still looks like one of them.
When Orbit Media used the Internet Archive to check 50 top marketing websites, they found these companies redesign roughly every two years. Among their own clients, typical small and mid-sized businesses, the gap between major redesigns was more than six years.
That difference is the gap your competitors can use. The companies that look sharp online aren't necessarily better than you. They just refresh more often.
While design moves on, the average website keeps getting bigger and slower. According to the HTTP Archive, the median mobile page more than quadrupled in weight in ten years. Plugins, trackers, sliders and page builders pile up, and every extra kilobyte costs speed on a phone.
Median weight of a mobile home page, measured in October. Source: HTTP Archive, Web Almanac 2024.
Most businesses handle their website the same way. Every five to seven years, when it becomes embarrassing, they start a big redesign project. Proposals, pitch decks, workshops, months of meetings. The new site launches, everyone is relieved, and then nobody touches it again. It slowly ages until the cycle starts over.
The problem isn't the people. It's the model. A big rebuild is expensive and risky, so you put it off. Because you put it off, the gap grows. Because the gap is big, the next rebuild is even bigger. And in the years in between, your website is working against you.
Illustration of the principle, not measured data.
There's also a hidden cost. When you rebuild from scratch, you throw away things that work: pages that rank in Google, content your clients know, years of small improvements. Many redesigns lose search traffic simply because nobody planned what to keep.
The obvious shortcut is a template or a website builder. Pick a theme, add your logo, done. For a brand-new business with no budget, that's a fair start. But it doesn't solve the problem this letter is about. It makes it worse.
A template gets you online quickly. It doesn't get you a website that keeps up with your business.
Animals don't molt because something is broken. They molt because they've grown. The old layer doesn't fit anymore, so it's shed, and the new one grows from the same body. Nothing essential is lost.
That's the core of our thesis. Your website shouldn't be rebuilt from zero every six years. It should molt: shed what no longer fits and grow a new layer from what already works. Regularly, quickly, and without starting over.
Anyone can promise a great website. We'd rather show you. Before you commit, we design a first version of your new homepage, so you judge real work instead of a sales pitch. If it's not right for you, you simply don't continue.
Your current site isn't worthless. It holds your content, your reputation and often years of Google rankings. We keep what works and shed what doesn't: the new layer grows from the same body, only stronger.
Long projects don't make better websites. They make tired teams and outdated plans. With a clear scope, a small senior team and modern tools, most projects go live in one to four weeks.
If websites age faster every year, the answer isn't a new template every few years. It's a website that's designed for you and built to change.
A custom website is designed around your clients, your services and your brand, not around a theme. And when it's built on a flexible system of reusable parts, like colors, type, buttons and page blocks, it can molt. A new look, a new service or a new standard doesn't mean a new website. It means updating the parts that need it.
Custom used to mean slow and expensive. That's no longer true. Modern tools and a focused process make it possible to design and build a custom site in weeks, and to keep it current with small molts instead of big rebuilds.
| The old way | The Molt way | |
|---|---|---|
| How it starts | Pitch decks, proposals and promises | We show you a first version of your new homepage before you pay |
| Approach | Tear everything down and start from zero | Keep what works, shed what doesn't |
| Foundation | A template that ages with its trend | A custom design system that can evolve |
| Timeline | 3 to 6 months of workshops and rounds | Live in 1 to 4 weeks |
| Rhythm | A big rebuild every 5 to 7 years | Small molts whenever your business grows |
| Price | Open-ended hours and surprise invoices | Fixed scope and a fixed price, agreed upfront |
| Risk | You find out if it's good at launch | You see it before you commit |

About Molt
A small website transformation studio with one focus: helping good businesses get a website that finally fits who they've become.
molt
To shed an old outer layer to make room for growth.
Snakes, crabs and birds do it. So do businesses.
Animals don't molt because something is broken. They molt because they've grown. The old skin simply doesn't fit anymore.
We think most websites are in the same place. They aren't broken. They're outgrown. The business inside has moved on, and the outer layer hasn't caught up.
And here's the part we love: the new layer grows from the same body. Nothing essential is thrown away. That's how we work too. We keep what works and shed what doesn't.
Our logo is the letter M with its old outline slipping off. The grey line is the old skin. The solid letter is what's underneath: the same shape, just stronger.
It's the whole idea of Molt in one mark. Not a new identity from scratch, but the best version of what was already there.
The early web was strange, personal and made by hand. Every site felt like someone cared. Then everything turned into templates.
Our look is a nod to that era. We're not nostalgic about the technology; nobody misses dial-up. We're nostalgic about the care. The best websites still feel like they were made for someone.
Because your brand should be the color. Our job is the structure, the words and the craft that make it work.
Curious what your molt looks like?
Comparison
Both can build you a great website. The difference is how you get there: how fast, how much risk you carry, and what happens to what you already have. Here's an honest comparison to help you choose the right partner for your website redesign.
Updated September 2026 · 8 min read
you need a large, complex platform, months of stakeholder alignment, or one partner for your website, campaigns and media.
your business has outgrown its website and you want a better one live in weeks, with a fixed price and a first version you can see before you pay.
A traditional web agency is a full-service team that plans, designs and builds websites, often alongside branding, campaigns and marketing. Most agencies follow a waterfall process: a discovery phase, a strategy phase, design, development, testing and launch. Each phase ends with a presentation and a round of feedback before the next one starts.
That process has real strengths. It gives large organisations a clear structure for decisions, it suits complex projects with many integrations, and a good agency brings a wide range of specialists under one roof. If your website is connected to an ERP system, a customer portal or a large product catalogue, that depth matters.
The downside is time and uncertainty. Because every phase depends on the one before, projects often take three to six months. And because design and build happen late in the process, you usually only see what you are getting after most of the budget has been spent.
Molt is a website transformation studio. We work with businesses that are good at what they do, but whose website no longer shows it: accountancy firms, agencies, consultants, clinics, SaaS companies and brands that outgrew their first site.
Instead of starting with proposals and workshops, we start with the work. Before you commit, we design a first version of your new homepage, so you can judge real design instead of a pitch. If it's right, we build the rest with a fixed scope and a fixed price, and most projects go live within one to four weeks.
We also don't start from zero. Your current website holds content, reputation and often years of Google rankings. We keep what works and shed what doesn't, the same way an animal molts: the new layer grows from the same body, only stronger.
Read the full thinking behind this approach in the Molt thesis.
Read the thesis| Traditional agency | Molt | |
|---|---|---|
| Starting point | Proposal, pitch deck and a discovery phase | A first version of your new homepage before you pay |
| Typical timeline | 3 to 6 months | 1 to 4 weeks |
| Pricing | Often hourly or phased estimates | Fixed scope and a fixed price |
| Your current site | Usually rebuilt from scratch | Keep what works, shed what doesn't |
| Team | Account manager, strategist, designer, developer, project manager | A small senior team: you talk to the people doing the work |
| Meetings | Workshops, steering meetings and review rounds | A kickoff, a review of the first version, and launch |
| Risk | You see the result late in the project | You see it before you commit |
| SEO during a redesign | Depends on the agency; new URLs are common | Existing URLs kept or redirected by default |
| After launch | Retainer or support contract | 30 days of support included, then as needed |
| Best for | Large, complex or multi-stakeholder projects | Service businesses, SaaS and brands that outgrew their site |
The biggest difference in cost is not the hourly rate, but how the price is set. Many agencies work with an estimate per phase or bill by the hour. That is fair for open-ended projects, but it means the final invoice depends on how many feedback rounds, meetings and change requests the project needs. Extra work is usually billed as a change request.
Molt works with a fixed scope and a fixed price, agreed after you have seen the first version of your homepage. Because the scope is clear before we start building, there are no surprise invoices. If you want something extra later, we quote it separately, before any work starts.
Typical timelines for a small to mid-sized business website. Every project is different.
Why do agency projects take so long? Mostly because of waiting, not working. Every phase needs a presentation, feedback from several people and a new round of changes. Calendars have to line up. Handovers between strategists, designers and developers add days each time.
A faster timeline doesn't mean less care. It means fewer handovers, fewer meetings and decisions made on real design instead of documents. With a small senior team, the person who designs your site also helps build it.
One of the biggest hidden risks of a website redesign is losing search traffic. When a site is rebuilt from scratch, page addresses often change, content gets rewritten or removed, and pages that used to rank well in Google suddenly disappear. Traffic can drop for months.
Good agencies prevent this with a redirect plan, but it is not always part of the standard scope. At Molt, protecting what already works is the starting point: we keep your strongest pages and URLs, redirect anything that moves, and carry over titles, descriptions and structured data. That is what "transform, don't restart" means in practice.
Want to know how your current site performs? The free site check includes an automatic speed and SEO scan.
Run the free site checkWhoever you choose, these questions help you compare offers fairly and avoid surprises later.
Usually, because a shorter project with a fixed scope needs fewer hours. But we don't try to be the cheapest. We compete on speed, clarity and less risk.
Yes, when the scope is clear. In long projects, most of the time goes to meetings and handovers, not to design and building.
Then you don't continue. That's the point of showing it before you pay.
Not if it's done carefully. We keep your strongest pages, redirect anything that moves and carry over your titles and descriptions, so search engines can follow the change.
No. We work with service businesses such as accountancy firms, agencies, consultants and clinics, with SaaS companies, and with brands. We also build and redesign Shopify stores.
You do. Designs, code, content and accounts are all yours after the final payment.
Yes. We focus on the website; your agency can keep running your campaigns, ads and content.
See the difference on your own site.

7.3 If a business client does not pay on time, it owes the statutory commercial interest without further notice. If a consumer does not pay on time, Molt first sends a free reminder with a 14-day payment term, after which statutory interest applies. Reasonable collection costs are borne by the client, for consumers in line with the statutory scale.
7.4 Third-party costs, such as domain names, hosting, paid themes, apps, fonts and stock images, are not included unless the quote says so.
8.1 After delivery, the client has 5 working days to check the work and report errors. If the client reports nothing within that period, or starts using the work, the work is considered accepted.
8.2 Minor errors that do not prevent use are no reason to reject the work. Molt fixes them as soon as possible.
8.3 After launch, the client receives 30 days of support. This covers fixing errors in Molt's work free of charge and small changes up to [X] hours. New requests after that are additional work or part of a separate support plan.
9.1 If the client is not satisfied with the delivered work, it can ask for its money back within 30 days after delivery.
9.2 The request must reach Molt by email within those 30 days, with a short explanation. Molt first gets the chance to solve the problem within 10 working days. If that does not work to the client's satisfaction, Molt refunds [the full amount paid to Molt for the order] within 14 days.
9.3 Third-party costs (see 7.4) and additional work are not covered by the guarantee.
9.4 After a refund, all of the client's rights to the delivered work end. The client stops using it immediately and takes it offline. Molt may reuse the work without identifiable data or material of the client.
9.5 The guarantee applies once per client and not to separate support hours, maintenance or hosting.
10.1 After full payment, the rights to the custom work Molt made for the client, such as designs, code and copy, are transferred to the client. The client also receives the accounts and access that belong to the website.
10.2 Until full payment, all rights remain with Molt and the client may only use the work for review.
10.3 Third-party components, such as open-source software, themes, plugins, fonts and stock images, are subject to those third parties' licences. General know-how, methods and reusable code snippets that Molt also uses for others remain Molt's; the client receives a permanent right to use them for its website.
10.4 Molt may show the work in its portfolio and marketing unless the client objects in writing.
11.1 Websites often run on third-party platforms such as Shopify, WordPress, Webflow or a hosting provider. Their terms also apply. Molt is not liable for outages, price changes or decisions of those third parties.
11.2 Molt does not guarantee specific search rankings, conversion rates or revenue. Example figures on the website are illustrations, not promises.
12.1 Molt's liability is limited to direct damage and to no more than the amount the client paid for the order concerned, with a maximum of the amount Molt's insurer pays out in that case.
12.2 Molt is not liable for indirect damage, such as consequential damage, lost revenue, lost profit or loss of data.
12.3 These limitations do not apply in case of intent or deliberate recklessness by Molt, nor insofar as the law does not allow them towards consumers.
12.4 The client makes regular backups of its website and data itself, unless Molt explicitly provides this as a service.
13.1 Molt is not obliged to perform if it cannot due to force majeure, such as illness, outages at internet or platform providers, power failures or other circumstances beyond Molt's control. If force majeure lasts longer than 60 days, either party may terminate the agreement in writing. Work already done is settled proportionally.
14.1 The parties keep each other's confidential information secret.
14.2 If Molt processes personal data on behalf of the client, for example customer data in a webshop, the parties conclude a data processing agreement. How Molt itself handles personal data is described in the privacy statement.
15.1 The client may cancel an ongoing order in writing. Work done up to that point is settled proportionally, with a minimum of the first instalment.
15.2 Molt may suspend the work or terminate the agreement if the client does not meet its obligations, for example by not paying, after a written reminder with a reasonable term.
16.1 If a consumer concludes a distance contract, they have a 14-day cooling-off period (right of withdrawal). If the consumer wants Molt to start within those 14 days, Molt asks for explicit consent. If the consumer withdraws afterwards, they pay for the part already performed. Once the service has been fully performed, the right of withdrawal lapses.
16.2 Nothing in these terms limits the rights consumers have under the law.
17.1 Complaints can be emailed to hello@molt-studio.com. Molt responds within 14 days.
18.1 Dutch law applies to all agreements.
18.2 Disputes are submitted to the competent court in the district where Molt is located (District Court of Gelderland). A consumer may choose the court that is competent by law within one month after Molt invokes this clause.
19.1 Molt may change these terms. The new version applies to orders placed afterwards. For ongoing orders, the version that applied when the agreement was concluded remains in force.
